Butterfly pupae care sheet

Choosing the right place is one of the most important parts of hatching, before you buy your butterfly, please read our short description of the species, which always includes the expected dimensions of the butterfly. You have to choose the place accordingly. If your butterfly’s wingspan is, for example, 15 cm, you need to  find a place for it to fit on all sides. With tropical butterflies, it is important that it is relatively warm and that the humidity is adequate, but this does not mean that you have to set up a separate terrarium for them. Do not expose the doll to direct sunlight!

 Your most important tasks:

  1. Spray your pupae with water 1-3 times a day,
depending on the humidity of the room, with
room temperature water (it’s okay if you forget
once or twice, but please spray them as soon as
    you remember.
  2. Please keep the butterfly pupa at room
    temperature: between 23-26 degrees.

If you bought a butterfly in a plastic cup from us
at an exhibition, you only need to pay attention to the temperature, we have already solved the humidification.

Important! Please, never put cotton wool or any other material under the pupa in which the animal can become entangled, it is rare for the animal to fall during hatching, in which case it will immediately look for a hiding place, but if it becomes entangled, it will not find a new place and its wings will not be stretched and will not be able to fly your butterfly.

What should I do if I bought a moth and the
moth is in a cocoon?
Tie the end of the cocoon with a thread and
hang it somewhere, just like with other
butterflies. Please do not take the animal out of
the cocoon and under no circumstances heat it
directly with an infrared lamp, as this will kill the
moth. You have to treat it exactly the same as
any other butterfly pupa.

Good advice! Don’t be scared if your puppets
wiggle or rattle, it only means good things! Since
they are living beings, it is natural for them to
squirm

When will my butterfly hatch?
Hatching a butterfly requires patience, your
butterfly will not hatch immediately and it is
impossible to determine the exact time of
hatching to the minute, but we have experienced
that the hatching is usually timed for the morning
and happens in seconds. After the moths or
butterflies emerge from the cracked shell, their
tiny wings are continuously pumped up and
dried in 2-3 hours and become able to fly. You
can make sure that it is dry by moving the wings
of the "test" bird. In this case, if it is in a glass,
let it out carefully, if it is free, wait until it flies
away on its own.

IMPORTANT! After hatching from the pupa,
each moth empties the accumulated scum left
over from the caterpillar stage, which is usually a
yellowish, black, or whitish liquid that the animal
ejects several times, so do not place your pupae
directly near the wall or curtains.

Day butterflies typically have to wait a few days
until they hatch, while night butterflies can take
weeks or even months!

In rare cases, the butterfly gets "stuck" in the
pupa during hatching, in which case if it does not
come out within a few minutes, you must
definitely help it without touching its wings! It is
worth spraying a little with water, in this case the
puppet is too hard and cannot escape.

What should I do if my butterfly doesn’t want to
eat right away?
First of all, don’t be alarmed if he doesn’t eat
right away, he needs some time to recover and
get hungry, unless you bought a moth that has
no mouthparts, because then he really won’t eat
such as the Atlas butterfly.
Feed them with ripe fruit or homemade artificial
nectar. To prepare and feed artificial nectar at
home, you can watch the video we made here.
